Daughters' plea: Help find our dad

Lowell Sun article: Daughters' plea: Help find our dad

Dracut man missing since Tuesday
By Jennifer Myers, jmyers@lowellsun.com

DRACUT -- Tears filling her eyes, Jacquelyn Coutu, 19, stood in the parking lot of Dillon McAnespie Park Saturday afternoon pleading for anyone who has information about the disappearance of her father to call Dracut police, or for her dad to call home.

Leo Coutu, a 49-year-old retired corrections officer, has been missing since about 5 p.m. Tuesday. His wife of 18 years, Tanya Coutu, said she and her two younger daughters, Rylee, 17 and Lily, 11, went to her sister's house at 4:30 p.m. When they returned home, Leo Coutu was gone.

Jacquelyn Coutu said it is not unusual for her father to take daily walks. He often frequents places in their neighborhood off Nashua Road such as Mike's Ice Cream and Dillon McAnespie Park. Leo Coutu is 5-feet-4-inches tall, with a slim build weighing 130 pounds with fair skin, gray hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue-and-white striped polo shirt, blue shorts and sneakers.

"He left that evening with nothing but his wallet," Jacquelyn Coutu said. "We believe he left on foot and there have been reports of sightings. It is very important to note my father has never done anything like this before. He has never disappeared before. This is completely out of his character. "My father is very close to my mother, sisters and I, so it is hard to believe he would purposely not be in contact with us," she added.

Leo Coutu, the son of the late Edmond "Gus" Coutu, a former Lowell city councilor and School Committee member, worked as a corrections officer for 22 years, most recently at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center, the maximum-security prison in Shirley.

Saturday morning, more than two dozen volunteers assisted Dracut police in searching the Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsboro State Forest and surrounding neighborhood for signs of Leo Coutu, but came up empty.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Dracut police at 978-957-2123.

Search for missing Dracut man continues

Lowell Sun article: Dracut police search for missing man

By John Collins, jcollins@lowellsun.com

DRACUT -- A team of Dracut and NEMLEC police officers, with the help of two K-9 units, conducted a search in the area of Davis Road and Dexter Avenue Thursday for a missing 49-year-old man who hasn't been seen by family members since Tuesday afternoon, Lt. Michael Fleury said.

Leo Coutu was reported missing to police by a relative at midnight Tuesday.

On Thursday morning, about a dozen Dracut police officers and members of the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council were seen combing the area in a concentrated attempt to locate Coutu. Coutu was described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing 130 pounds, with short, graying hair and facial stubble.

"He walks with a noticeable limp due to an injury to his left leg," said Fleury, citing a family member's description. "He was last seen at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday when he was believed to have left his residence on foot." When last seen he was wearing a navy-blue-and-white-striped polo shirt, blue shorts and multicolored sneakers, a family member reported.

Officers checked in and around the local park, pharmacy and ice-cream stand that Coutu has been known to frequent, Fleury said.

Fleury requested that any member of the public who thinks he or she may have spotted Coutu or may have information about his whereabouts to call the Dracut Police Department at 978-957-2123. Dracut police said they suspended the search at 8 p.m. due to darkness and will restart the search Friday morning.
